The Most Common Symptoms of Breast Cancer
The condition in which a mass of undifferentiated cells that grow abnormally and can cause harm to the body is called cancer. When these cells are those of the breasts, the condition is called breast cancer. This is quite a common type of cancer that affects many women. It can develop due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Treatment includes chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation therapy. In some cases, one may have to remove one or both the breasts partially or entirely. This depends on the severity of the condition and how far it has spread.
Here are some symptoms of breast cancer
Changes in the breast’s texture: If a person has breast cancer, the texture of the skin on the breasts starts changing. Inflammation is the main cause of this texture change. One’s skin may appear scaly around the nipple and areola. A portion of the breast may thicken. A part of the breast may experience irritation and itchiness
Nipple discharge: Breast cancer can cause nipple discharge in which the liquid can be thick. The discharge can vary in color. It may appear milky, yellow, red, or green. Women who are breastfeeding may experience milky discharge often. If the discharge is of any other type or if one is not breastfeeding, consult a doctor immediately.
Dimpling: An aggressive type of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer can make an appearance through skin dimpling on the breasts. This occurs due to the buildup of lymph fluid in the breasts caused by cancer cells. Skin dimples often resemble an orange peel.
Changes in lymph nodes: Lymph nodes are balls of immune system tissues that capture harmful or foreign substances that can pose a threat to the body. When a cancer cell exits the breast, it immediately travels to the lymph node region in the underarm closest to it. This results in inflammation of the lymph nodes there. Swollen lymph nodes may also additionally appear near the collar bones.
One should consult a doctor if they notice any of these symptoms.
Breast and nipple pain: One may experience pain, discomfort, tenderness, and sensitivity in the affected breast and nipple. Sometimes, people may experience a burning sensation in both areas. These feelings of pain and tenderness can be a result of many other conditions and factors. Speak to the doctor immediately to confirm the condition.
Nipple inversion: Breast cancer can cause changes in the cells behind the nipple, causing it to invert or reverse into the breast. It may shrink in size too. This may sometimes happen during ovulation but if a sudden change is visible, one should get it checked immediately.
Redness and swelling: Breast cancer can leave the skin on the breast looking bruised and discolored. The discoloration may be red, purple, or have a blue tint. Breast cancer can cause the entire breast to swell up making it look different from the other breast. The skin may also feel tight after inflammation takes place.
If these changes aren’t the result of an injury or trauma, one should seek immediate medical attention.
